User Story Mapping Workshop

April 14, 2014 News & Updates

A team of 10 Innosphere employees participated in a full day workshop on User Story Mapping with Paul Carvalho. Carvalho is an agile and testing coach and trainer with over 25 years of experience working with teams on computers, software and technology.

Carvalho provided our team with direct training on User Story Mapping; a process used in agile software development or product management. This technique requires involvement from the entire team developing the system. Team members gather to discuss how the system needs to operate. In doing so, everyone jots down requirements in single sentences using “every day or business language”, that’s typically used by the system’s end users. In doing this we’re able to better comprehend the ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘why’ behind each requirement and allows the technical team to capture the way the user will want the system to function.

The workshop participants really enjoyed the hands on approach that Paul used. They further described his teaching technique as fun, practical and definitely useful. Three takeaway points reported from our staff participants are listed below:

  1. Using Story Mapping to map a “User Journey”
  2. Learning how to effectively break User story’s or “User Activities” up into User Tasks
  3. Using Specification by example to bring shared understanding of requirements
